7 missing in WB boat capsize tragedy
Rescue workers led by an NDRF team recovered the body of a female last evening while seven persons including a six year-old girl were still missing in the boat-capsize tragedy in river Hooghly in Shantipur, Nadia.
Earlier in the day, reportedly infuriated at delayed start of rescue work, local people indulged in torching of boats and ferry service office and fought a pitched battle with Police and other security forces at Shantipur ferry ghat.
The capsize occurred on Saturday night when huge crowds of Shantipur and Phulia residents were returning by ferry services after attending the Bhaba Pagla fair in Kalna, Burdwan across the river.
Locals informed that the ill-fated trawler capsized near the Kalna ghat due to overloading. Several passengers were rescued by locals and other ferry workers soon after the incident but a number of people are still missing. DM and SP Burdwan are supervising the rescue efforts at Kalna.
Five divers have been deputed. The search for the missing persons will continue tonight in flood lights that have been installed today, informed Nadia DM, Vijay Bharati who is camping at the spot.
