EC to keep an eye on use of drugs to woo voters in Punjab

Drugs, liquor and money are likely to play a big role in Punjab assembly elections.There are allegations that some political parties may inject a dose of money and drugs to woo the voters.

Liquor and money is distributed openly in the public rallies during the elections besides the drugs. Keeping in view the threat,Punjab Chief Electoral Officer V.K.Singh has formulated an action plan with the help of state and national agencies to deal with law and order situation and stopping the use of drugs and alcohol to influence the voters during upcoming State Legislative Assembly elections.

In order to implement the action plan at field level and for effective control, monitoring and coordination district level committees have also been constituted.

An spokesman of the Commission said that the district level committees would be headed by the Deputy Commissioners of the respective district, who will be the Chairman; the other members of the committee would be the Commissioner of police/Senior Superintendent of Police, Representative from Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB- GOI), Civil surgeon, Representative from Income Tax Department and Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner.

The committee will adopt two pronged action as coordination committee for control of misuse of drugs and psychotropic substance, liquor and money, firstly by launching intensive public awareness and behavioural changes communication through SVEEP activities. Secondly by monitoring law enforcement process and while doing that they will also ensure that enforcement is effective and transparent at the same time.

The committee can raise any issue of implementation and coordination with higher-level committees and CEO office.
