Chandigarh : The dog is called man's best friend, and proving this once again a pet dog here dragged out two of his master's children from inside their burning house, sustaining serious burns in the process. However, the kids died later in hospital, police said Friday evening.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) registered by Chandigarh police, a pet dog dragged two children, who were sleeping inside the house when it caught fire, to safety.
In the entire operation, the dog also sustained serious burn injuries.
The four children of daily wage labourers were alone in their small hutment, situated at a secluded place in the fields in Kaimbwala village here. Their parents had gone to work at the time of the incident.
"While playing, one of the boys ignited the fire by lighting a match stick and due to the presence of combustible things like dried wood and plastic, the fire spread all over the hutment," Har Sahai Sharma, investigating officer of the case told IANS here Friday evening.
He added, "Two of the children, one aged three and the other one, were sleeping inside the hut at the time. They got trapped in the fire while the other two siblings ran out of the home. The dog was tied with a rope but it got freed as the fire caught its rope."
After getting free, the dog instead of running away, went inside the burning house and dragged out the children one by one.
On seeing the flames, people from nearby areas gathered at the spot and shifted the kids to hospital.
"The kids were admitted to a government hospital in very serious condition. From there they were referred to Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), where they died after a few hours," stated Sharma.
