Heavy snowfall starts in Kashmir

February 6th, 2010

Srinagar: Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was closed for vehicular traffic Saturday morning following heavy snowfall in Jawahar tunnel area of the road.

"Following fresh snowfall and slippery road conditions, the highway has been closed for traffic today (Saturday)," an officer of the traffic department said here.

It has been snowing across Kashmir since morning.

Reports reaching here from Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg hill stations indicate that heavy snowfall has started in these places.

The local weather office has forecast heavy snowfall in the higher reaches and moderate to heavy snowfall in the plains of the Kashmir valley for the next six days.

Sonam Lotus, director of the local weather office, also advised people living in the higher, avalanche prone areas to move about with caution because of possible avalanches in such areas.
