Himachal to do away with plastic liquor bottles

March 7th, 2010

Shimla : In a step towards making Himachal Pradesh plastic-free, the state government has decided to do away with plastic liquor bottles from April 1 and promote glass ones, an official said here Sunday.

"We have decided to do away with the plastic bottles of liquor from April 1. Initially, 50 percent of the plastic bottles of liquor will be replaced by glass bottles. Later, all plastic bottles would be replaced," a government spokesperson told IANS.

He said the aim was to reduce the use of plastic in day-to-day life.

Himachal Pradesh has already imposed a ban on the production, storage, use, sale and distribution of all types of polythene bags made of non-biodegradable materials.

The ban does not include those bags used for packing food items like milk and cereals.

But the government is planning to ban all plastic materials like disposable plates, cups and glasses in the future.
