Migrants attack youth in Punjab town, five injured

December 7th, 2009

Ludhiana: Punjab's industrial hub of Ludhiana had some more moments of tension Sunday evening when edgy migrants residing here cornered a few motorcycle-borne youth and left them injured after thrashing them, police said.

Police officials said that the migrants, who caught the youth in Dhandhari area here, thought that they were from the bikers' gang which had been looting migrants in recent months.

Two motorcycles were also set on fire by the migrants.

Zonal Inspector General of Police Sanjiv Kalra said: "The migrants thought that these youth on motorcycles were from the gang who were looting them in recent months. Five youth have been admitted to the hospital. We have found that these youth have a history of being vagabonds though they might not be involved in the robberies."

Police officials said that a few migrants, mostly from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, were detained following the attack on the youth.

Migrants in this industrial city had gone on rampage Thursday night and Friday after another incident of looting and the police failing to register a case.

They set 23 vehicles, including nine of the police and an army truck on fire and left 15 policemen injured in clashes Friday.

Authorities had to impose curfew in five police divisions here Friday to control the situation.

Road and railway traffic was affected here during the violence Friday.
