Setback to BJP as Congress wins Uttarakhand floor test
President’s rule has been lifted in Uttarakhand. The development came after the Supreme Court yesterday declared that Congress has won the floor test held in the State Assembly on Tuesday.
The court said, of the 62 votes in the 71-member Assembly Harish Rawat had won 33 votes. Nine rebel MLAs were not allowed to take part in the vote.
The court said Rawat will assume office as Chief Minister after the President’s Rule is revoked.
Following the court’s order, the Union Cabinet had recommended revocation of President’s Rule in the state.
Rawat has convened a meeting of the state cabinet today. His media adviser Surendra Kumar said, the meeting will be held in Dehradun. Asked whether Rawat will assume office as Chief Minister, Kumar said, formal assumption of office is not necessary, as he does not have to take charge from anyone else.
