Speed up prosecutions against human rights violators, UN to Sri Lanka
United Nations has urged Sri Lanka to implement judicial reforms to speed up the prosecutions against human rights violators in the country. The UN Special Rapporteur Juan Mendez yesterday said, torture still continues in Sri Lanka.
Speaking to reporters yesterday after concluding his visit to Sri Lanka, he asked the Lanka Government to scrap country’s Prevention of Terrorism Act, eliminate prolonged detention without trial in various forms, and establish the mechanism for real judicial control over police investigations.
Another UN special rapporteur Monica Pinto, who accompanied Mr. Mendez during the Lankan visit said, despite the ending of civil war and change of government in Sri Lanka, much of the war machinery is still the same.
Last year, Sri Lanka had agreed to establish a judicial process involving foreign judges and prosecutors to investigate alleged war crimes during the conflict in line with UN.
