Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Captain Amarinder Singh on Sunday warned the BJP led NDA government at the centre against dividing people along the caste and communal lines. He questioned the mysterious silence of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on such a serious issue.
He condemned the series of excesses and atrocities against the members of the Dalit community across the country which he warned can have dangerous and disastrous consequences. “We already have many external enemies ready to destablise and weaken our country and let us not facilitate them and make their job easy by dividing our own people”, he warned.
Addressing a massive dharna staged here today to protest against the Dalit atrocities in the country, Capt Amarinder said, this had never happened in India.
“I was shocked and shaken after watching the video of three dalit boys being beaten up after being tied up with a car”, he said, while adding, “this is the worst crime and the criminals must be dealt with severe punishment”. It was all the more shameful since it happened in Modi’s home state.
The PCC president said, when the country should be concerned over the enemies along the borders like Pakistan and China, there are sections inside, who are trying to divide people.
“Imagine what will happen if we place one community against the other in the name of caste and religion?” he asked, while adding, India is considered as an emerging power in the world and the incidents like what happened in Gujarat should make everybody feel concerned.
The former Chief Minister said, there appeared to be a pattern in the violence against Dalits. Gujarat’s was not isolated incident, he said, adding, it was one in the series. “This is happening in UP, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and everywhere and the government is watching as a mute spectator”, he said.
Capt Amarinder also condemned the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for his silence over what happened in Phagwara recently. “We have been living in peace and harmony and we will not allow anybody to disturb this peaceful atmosphere”, he warned, while asking Mr Badal to take strong action against trouble mongers as they are not only threat to peace, but to the prosperity of Punjab also.
Jalandhar MP Chaudhry Santokh Singh, former minister Avtar Henry, Amarjit Singh Samra, DCC president Jagbir Brar, Hans Raj Hans and Chaudhry Surjit Singh also spoke on the occasion.
