ED to question Damanvir Singh again
Former Punjab Jail minister’s son Damanvir Singh who evaded questioning by Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Rs 5000 Cr synthetic drug smuggling case for as long as four months has finally been questioned first time on Tuesday. Sources said he is likely to be questioned on Monday again as his full statement is yet to be recorded.
Sources close to ED said Damanvir was asked to answer 27 questions by ED investigation officer Niranjan Singh who has prepared an 18 page statement on the basis of questioning.
ED during the seven hour first time questioning has established business relationship between Damanvir Singh and Chuni Lal Gaba, Jalandhar (Goraya) based businessman who was arrested along with his son Gurjit Singh alias Monu on June 19 in connection with the Rs 5000 Cr synthetic drug connection.
ED has found that both Damanvir Singh and Chuni Lal Gaba are partners and also run a cold storage unit in Goraya. ED sleuths have also found some business transactions between the duo.Sources also said Damanvir has been asked to produce the property and other documents on June 30 during the second phase of questioning.
Damanvir Singh , sources said ,has also accepted his relations with the Delhi based synthetic drug lord Varinder Singh alias Raja son of Jaswant Singh , resident of 98 Vikas Puri, New Delhi- who was arrested from New Delhi on December 8, 2013 for running a synthetic drug network . He is currently lodged in Patiala jail.
Damanvir has told the ED officials that Varinder Singh is his classmate and they studied together in a Mohali school.He has also told the ED that Gurjit Singh alias Monu is his friend and has friendly relations with the Gaba family . He has even said on record that they were together but has denied any role in the synthetic drug business. Sources also said he has also denied he introduced Varinder Singh alias Raja to Chuni Lal Gaba as alleged by the drug lord Jagdish Singh Bhola.
It is worth mentioning here that Damanvir Singh is general secretary of the youth wing of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Youth Akali Dal.Jagdish Singh Bhola in a statement given to the ED had said that Punjab revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia and Damanvir Singh Phillaur are involved in the synthetic drug smuggling network.
It is worth mentioning here that the Income Tax department on February 18 had seized a diary from Chuni Lal Gaba’s cold storage which had names of Damanvir Singh Phillaur besides other politicians , bureaucrats and police officers.
The diary allegedly has details about some politicians,bureaucrats and police officers who were allegedly bribed by Gaba besides details about the transactions. Gaba had allegedly surrendered Rs 16 crore cash during the IT department raid.
Gaba’s diary allegedly has names of a Punjab minister, IPS officer and two Punjab Administrative officers who have invested their illegal money through Gaba. The entries in the diary, sources say, has also details about the investments and profits earned by the ‘investors’.
The income tax department did not handover the diary to the Enforcement Directorate for long time which delayed the investigation.
Druglord Jagdish Singh Bhola has allegedly told ED sleuths that Damanvir Singh Phillaur had introduced Chuni Lal Gaba to Delhi based synthetic drug smuggler Varinder Singh alias Raja who was arrested on December 10-11 , 2013 and is currently in Patiala jail. Bhola in his statement to ED sleuths has also confirmed that Chuni Lal Gaba used to supply pseudoephedrine to Varinder Singh alias Raja. As Gaba owns a drug unit in Baddi , Himachal Pradesh which also hints that there might be a pseudoephedrine supply link to the case . Sources also said that Gaba’s drug unit allegedly manufactured Ice drug which was being supplied to Raja.
Punjab police had seized Two kg pseudoephedrine (worth Rs 2 crore) and 250 gms of Ice (worth Rs 1.25 crore) from the possession of Aulakh and Jagjit Singh Chahal. The police had also raided three drug units located at Baddi and Damtal in Himachal Pradesh which are owned by Chahal. Chahal
supplied pseudoephedrine to Jagdish Singh Bhola. Raids on Chahal’s factories were conducted on November 15,2013.Chuni Lal Gaba who is now regarded as a real estate tycoon , had an humble beginning and used to run a vegetable stall ( Rehri) on pavement previously. Gaba’s son Gurmej Gaba, who is a co-owner of a Baddi drug unit is also vice-president of the Goraya municipal counsil.
