HC clears Udta Punjab with a single cut !
The Bombay High Court has just passed its judgement on Udta Punjab and given the makers the green signal to release the film with just one cut and a revised disclaimer.
Out of the long list of supposed cuts, The Honorable court has asked to remove only one scene in which Shahid Kapoor is seen urinating on crowd.
Produced by Phantom Films and Balaji Motion Pictures the movie made top news after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) headed by Pahlaj Nihalani ordered many cuts and also proposed to change the title or delete the word ‘Punjab’ from the title.
The makers however objected to the proposed cuts and the ugly spat between the producers and CBFC made top news triggering a fresh debate on freedom of expression.
Directed by Abhishek Choubey Udta Punjab stars Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor, and Diljit Dosanjh.
The Court said, ”Art must render obscenity so trivial that it doesn’t affect people’s minds. Holding up certificate, suggesting cuts routinely will prove counterproductive. Punjab is a land of warriors and martyrs and people must not be overly sensitive to a single dialogue that has the word kanjar.’
The makers have sensed a sign of relief and Anurag Kashyap who fought the battle with CBFC posted the development on his social media handle and said, ”I believe!!!!!!”
Abhishek Choubey shared, ” Massively relieved today, looking to release the film on the scheduled date”.
Udta Punjab is scheduled to release this Friday and the makers are likely to make the official announcement on the judgement and the release date very soon.
