Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has been disqualified from contesting election for a period of ten years.
The vacancy of the Srirangam Constituency from which Jayalalithaa has been elected has also been notified by the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker P. Dhanapal.
The state government Gazette says that the vacancy has risen due to the disqualification under Section 8 of the Representation of people Act. It also states that Jayalalithaa stood convicted under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Consequent upon the conviction she stands disqualified for a further period of six years since her release in terms of the existing section of the people’s representation act.
