Haryana government’s silence on Sant Rampal controversy has attracted a major criticism from the opposition parties. Chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who also holds the home department, remained tight
lipped about the controversy and avoided speaking to the media. His cabinet colleagues also remained silent.
so far Only the Haryana Directoer General of Police (DGP) S N Vashisth,Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Sanjeev Kaushal and the Additional Chief Secretary, Home, P.K Mahapatra have spoken on the issue.
Chief minister Khattar, who was expected to speak on the issue on Wednesday, was seen in Delhi. He only broke the silence , that too by a tweet, after his silence also became an issue on the television channels.
“Govt. & Police are committed to ensure strict compliance of High Court orders, priority is to uphold the law without loss of innocent lives.Serious charges of sedition against Rampal & several followers by Haryana Police. Operations to continue till he is arrested from Ashram,” Khattar tweeted.
BJP is already on the backfoot on the issue after Haryana party affairs in-charge Anil Jain on Tuesday rather accepting the political and bureaucratic failure in Haryana spilled the beans on the media. He had said that the police action in Barwala was not a cricket match which was highlighted prominently by the media.
Khattar’s silence has not gone well with the leaders of opposition parties who have dubbed him as a ‘novice’.
While the former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has advised the state government to avoid unnecessary controversy and confrontation , party president Dr Ashok Tanwar said the situation arised as the state government was inexperienced.Congress CLP leader Kiran Choudhary has even demanded CM Khattar’s resignation on the issue.
“State’s BJP government took the Rampal issue casually and has never been serious about the issue. The chief minister and his cabinet colleagues lack lacks skills and experience to run the government. The chief minister who also holds the charge of the home department almost remained silent on the issue. No action was taken when Rampal’s followers were accumulating inside the ashram. The police officials were beating up each other when the operation was on.The government and the police did not initiate a dialogue with the Satlok Ashram. There was no dialogue,” Haryana congress , President Dr Ashok Tanwar said.
The leaders of opposition parties ,including congress and INLD, tried to protect Khattar government and said the police and administration should have acted when the first non-bailable arrest warrant was issued against Rampal.
“The government is new but the officers who handled the issue were experienced. They failed to handle the issue deftly.for quite sometime now the BJP has been hobnobbing with sect leaders and self styled spiritualists to polarize and win votes. This also explains why the State administration perhaps hesitated in executing the warrants of arrest issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court against Baba Ram Pal. This reluctance not only amounted to challenging the authority of the Hon’ble High Court but also was an attempt to lower its dignity.INLD strongly condemns the inertia, willful or induced, that has allowed a simple case of law order to deteriorate into a situation where the judiciary and the State, both stand challenged,” Senior INLD leader Abhay chautala said.
When contacted, senior Haryana BJP leader BJP leader and Panchkula district BJP chief Vishal Seth tried to protect the chief minister on his silence and said the police is doing its best to arrest the godman.
“BJP believes in action which speakes louder than the words.Chief minister’s statement was not important. The police and administration is doing their work,” vishal Seth said.
