Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho:Sloppily made social satire
One does not quite understand what message this film is trying to deliver through its ‘metaphor’ laden narrative. Is it about archaic Indian laws, the corrupt criminal justice system, widely prevalent superstitions, kangaroo courts, or sexually frustrated rural women and their amorous peccadillos? And then you have a she buffalo, Ms. Tanakpur, who has to carry this overload of BS to make it work.
It’s the story set in the hinterlands of UP and revolves around a rich and powerful gram pradhan (village head) Sualaal Gandass (Annu Kapoor), his sexually frustrated but beautiful wife Maya (Hrishita Bhatt), her paramour Arjun Prasad (Rahul Bagga), and a very productive she buffalo, the winner of a local beauty pageant, now known as Ms. Tanakapur.
Sualaal has a problem of premature ejaculation. The relatively younger wife Maya turns to the shoulders of a local lad Arjun Prasad, who aspires to join the police force, for solace and intimacy. Sualaal seeks help of ‘neem-hakims’ with no result. He also suspects that Maya is having an illicit relationship with Arjun and uses the services of a local Tantrik (Sanjay Mishra) to harm the young lad.
One fateful evening Maya and Arjun are caught together in Maya’s bedchamber by Sualaal. The gram pradhan’s lackey (Ravi Kishan) and other menials beat up Arjun badly and finally accuse him of raping Ms. Tanakpur, the she buffalo that delivers 20 liters of milk every day. The matter is investigated by a rank corrupt local police officer (OM Puri). Arjun is arrested, and finally the sensational case of ‘a she buffalo having been raped by a human’ is committed to the court.
It’s a badly developed screenplay and a terribly contrived unconvincing tale around a smart idea and premise. The direction is inconsistent and tacky, and lacks stylistic integrity. The film has very little cinematic substance and is quite low on technical parameters. It relies on force fitted comic gags and insipid scatological humor to entertain the audience. It works occasionally thanks largely to the ensemble of competent comedians in the film’s cast.
