Modi appeals Indians to devote time to cleanliness

modi_addressing-peoplePrime minister , Narendra Modi in his message on Swachh Bharat on Thursday appealed the people of India to devote time to cleanliness.

“I urge every one of you to devote at least hundred hours every year, that is two hours every week towards cleanliness. We can’t let India remain unclean any longer. On 2nd October I myself will set out with a broom and contribute towards this pious task,” Modi said.

Modi said that cleanliness is next to Godliness.He said that 0n 2nd October India is launching Swachh Bharat Mission, a massive mass movement, that seeks to create a Clean India.

“A clean India is the best tribute we can pay to Mahatma Gandhi when we celebrate his 150th birth anniversary in 2019. Mahatma Gandhi devoted his life so that India attains ‘Swarajya’. Now the time has come to devote ourselves towards ‘Swachchhata’ of our motherland,” Modi said.

Logo of ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ unveiled

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the logo for the five year long cleanliness mission was today unveiled by M.Venkaiah Naidu, Minister of Urban Development and Shri Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Rural Development and Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation here today.

Explaining the features of the Logo, Shri Venkaiah Naidu said, the spectacles of Mahatma with its bridge in the Tricolor signifies the nation uniting to achieve the vision of Mahama for a Clean India. He further said, for the Mahatma, cleanliness and India were like his two eyes through which he envisioned a clean India. The Minister recalled Gandhiji saying that ‘Cleanliness is Godliness’ and ‘Sanitation is more important than political freedom.’

Swachh Bharat-Swachh Vidyalaya Campaign

The Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Smriti Irani initiated the Swachh Bharat-Swachh Vidyalaya Campaign at Kendriya Vidyalaya, New Delhi today by participating in the cleanliness drive along with the school’s teachers and students.

The Swachh Bharat-Swachh Vidyalaya campaign began on 25th September, 2014 and will last for a month till 31st October 2014. The Union Minister used a broom and a shovel to clean the ground of the school. While addressing the teachers and the students of the school the Minister appealed to everyone to become a part of this campaign and contribute their efforts to make the drive a big success. The campaign is a prelude to the launch of this Abhiyan formally by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 2nd of October 2014.

The HRD Ministry had earlier decided to initiate Swachh Vidyalaya campaign from 25th September, 2014 in Kendriya Vidyalays and Navodaya Vidyalya Sangathans. The Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalya Sangathans would take up various activities under the cleanliness drive in schools.
