Though no one was injured in the petrol bomb attack, Meghalaya police have rounded up 50 people for their alleged involvement in the attack, a police official said.
Saturday’s incident came days after villagers from Rajabagan, about 80 km north of Shillong attacked members of a prominent social organisation — Hynniewtrep National Youth Front.
However, the police say that till a proper investigation was done, the two incidents could not be said to be inter-related.
“The situation might have flared up due to some misunderstanding between two individuals who had a tussle sometime back and this incident might be a likely outcome of that misunderstanding. But nothing can be said for certain now,” Akash Deep, the district magistrate of Ri-Bhoi, told IANS.
Deep said the situation is under control and all steps have been taken to ensure normalcy in the area.
Meanwhile, additional forces have been rushed in from Shillong to Rajabagan to maintain law and order, even as senior police are camping in the area to thwart any disturbance.
“We have rounded up around 50 people. We suspect them to be involved in the attack and we have taken all steps to ensure peace and tranquillity in the area,” M.K. Dhar, the district police chief of Ri-Bhoi said.
